My name is Nate Galbraith - some people call me sketchnate in real life, it feels weird. i draw a lot of goofy characters and objects, they're mostly traditional freehand ink drawings in my 'ghostbook' sketchbook series that are then refined and coloured digitally before they become products. the pseudonym 'sketchnate' was just a username i made up for the game Toribash when i was in highchool, and it's since become my entire identity. if you look hard enough, most of my characters could be broken down and traced back to the cartoons, graffiti, and skate art that inspired me growing up in the 90s and early 00s. often strange or abnormal creatures with cute and inviting features is my core theme, again inspired by the intersection of the media of my childhood when images of slime and big-eyed stuffed animals surrounded me.
I work out of my home studio in Toronto - I sleep beside the drawer that houses my printing and shipping supplies. despite being rejected from every art program I applied to since highschool, I managed to graduate from college with an Advanced Diploma in Visual and Creative Arts. I worked in a multitude of factory jobs, childcare, and graphic design, always using my spare time to fill my sketchbook and slowly build my audience online, learning what it was people liked that I enjoyed creating. for me, drawing isn't just my way of relaxing and having fun putting ideas down, but an innate need. because of this, i like to always carry a sketchbook on me, in case I have a stray idea, i see a stain that looks interesting, or i want to get out of talking to someone boring. I don't like to repeat myself too often, and because I'm always drawing without a base sketch i've learned to quickly get out a lot of characters in a short amount of time, which helps me further build my catalogue. I'm often compared to the creators of cartoons like Adventure Time and Regular Show, but i believe this is because we grew up at roughly the same time and so our brains have a lot of the same stuff in them. because of this, we have the same habit of twisting up subjects we're all used to as regular media consumers with something fresh and unexpected. a little ducky is cute, but who cares? a little ducky with muscles is rad, and can beat up your dad. when I'm not at home shipping off your orders, i can usually be found out in the streets making my friends wait for me to draw on trash or put up a sticker.
