It has always been a dream of mine to arrange great violin music for guitar, and this cadenza by violinist Fritz Kreisler is nothing short of spectacular! It is the first movement cadenza from Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Op.61. A while back I came across a brilliant arrangement of the entire concerto for guitar by the legendary Japanese guitarist Kazuhito Yamashita. I was so excited that I played through all the movements with a CD recording of the concerto in the background, doubling the solo violin, just to have some, albeit fixed, orchestral accompaniment. I noticed that guitarist Yamashita used the Kreisler cadenzas for all three movements, but with a twist: he arranged them to fit his playing style which in turn made them idiomatic to the guitar. My goal in this arrangement is not only to perform the Kreisler cadenza as closely as it was written for the violin while still keeping it "guitaristic", but also to have some of the most beautiful themes ever written adapted as a solo piece to perform in concerts. Therefore, to have a convincing ending, I arranged the orchestral parts from the end of the first movement (after the cadenza) with the solo violin part, which concludes this arrangement beautifully I believe, providing an overall satisfying result. The arrangement includes all fingerings necessary and the score has been written with phrase markings (dotted arches or curves) to clarify phrasing. The arrangement is approximately 4.5 minutes in length. I hope you enjoy it! PDF file. 10 pages in total.
