Hokum Tokem is an eclectic zine of creative writing that shifts between the worlds of fiction and non-fiction, but is tied so closely to our natural world through its themes and tone. Though the words would be nothing if they weren't paired so well with the artwork that at times seems fit for a mural, and at other times feel ripped from the pages of an artist's personal sketchbook. Hokum Tokem is a tiny world that we created and are so excited for you to look through. What is Hokum Tokem?

Hokum Tokem is a project based out of Corvallis, Oregon. The project is curated by Oliver Masters and Ruby Miller. Oliver is the writer and Ruby is the main artist, but when put together, they are a mean pair of novice battle technicians inspired by the ancient tactics of the Mongolian Nokud. Always looking for an excuse to drop everything and break out into an open skirmish wherever they go, hope that they never decide to travel through your city as a simple shift of the wind can bring about wartorn devastation, the likes of which have already brought down several civilizations. Luckily for you, they created a zine that is, at once, a fun collection of art and short stories, as it is at the same time, the symbolic pieces of an accord that with each purchase increases your communities chances for geo-political passivity.

Why is Hokum Tokem?

We knew we wanted to collaborate on a zine together, we just needed a name for it. On their own the words hokum and tokem have a strange air to them; hokum describes nonsense and tokem is left for you to define. Some think tokem has something to do with edible marijuana, others have described it as a variation on the word token. However you choose to define Tokem, you might wonder how the word is contextualized following hokum. Hokum Tokem. A sentiment to the unsentimental? Madness? A cause for wonder? Two words that just sound really good together?

What is a Zine?

This is a question we get a lot and it’s a fair one to ask. A zine is like a magazine except there is no big business involved, no advertisements, no agenda to push, no exploitations; just art and writing for art and writing’s sake. It’s all made by hand and is always made as something physical that you can hold, store above your toilet or on your coffee table, cut apart and collage with, or use as a fire starter. It’s a few pieces of paper and some ink, from us to you.
